Cable Marker Selection Made Easy: What To Look For

All cable markers function in very much the same fashion, but they are not all the same. When looking for a new cable marker unit, it's imperative that you understand this tip. A failure to consider the differences in available options increases the likelihood of you ending up with a marker you can't use. Here are some points to consider during your search.

Cable Gauge

One of the first things you want to consider when making your selection is the type of cable you need to mark, more specifically the size of the cable. The reason this factor is important is that cable markers are designed to fit snugly around the cable, and this can only happen if they are sized correctly.

While many of these markers do offer some flexibility in terms of adjusting the size of the marker, you want to have a general idea of the cable's gauge to ensure the marker isn't too small or excessively large. 

Environment

A cable marker is only helpful when it remains in good condition, and a part of ensuring this is making certain the type of marker you use is conducive to the environment where it will be used. For example, if you're using the markers in a highly humid environment, you want to choose a marker that is waterproof. 

Over time the moisture inside the air could cause the ink to fade and render the marker useless. At the same time, if you're using the cables in a highly dusty environment, it's best to choose a laminated marker to prevent the dust from damaging the marker. 

Timing

When you plan to label the cables is of importance as well. Typically, cable marking happens in one of two periods, before or after termination, the period when you plug the cable into the device. The reason timing is important is that when you install the markers determines the type of option you want to use. 

For example, you can only use sleeve cable markers before termination, because these markers must slip over the open end of the cable, which can only happen when it's not plugged in. Wrap-around markers, on the other hand, can be used before or after since you simply wrap them around the cable.
